Automatic NTP Time Synchronization

PosiTector Advanced instruments feature automatic time synchronization with a remote server using the Network Time Protocol (NTP) over WiFi.

Network Time Protocol (NTP) is an Internet protocol used to synchronize the clocks of computers to a common time reference—Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Using user-input values for time zone and daylight savings, an accurate time can be calculated worldwide.

Enabling NTP on PosiTector Advanced Gages

  1. Ensure WiFi is enabled
  2. Select Use NTP from the Setup>Set Clock menu
  3. Enter your desired NTP Server Address(es) and TX Time Zone details

NTP Server Address

By default, the PosiTector auto populates the address fields with a popular NTP server pool. These pool servers will utilize the closest available server to your location.  Alternative servers can be entered if desired.

TZ (Time Zone)

The PosiTector uses POSIX format to set the time zone. The time zone syntax format is entered as follows:

[Time Zone Name][Hours subtracted from UTC][Daylight Savings Time Zone Name][Hours Subtracted from UTC during Daylight Savings],[Start of Daylight Savings beginning with ‘M’ for ‘Month.Week.Day’ format],[End of Daylight Savings beginning with ‘M’ for ‘Month.Week.Day’ format]

TZ Examples:

Eastern Time in the Americas

EST5EDT4,M3.2.0,M11.1.0

From left to right:

  • EST5 is the time zone name and offset from UTC
  • EDT4 is the daylight savings time zone name and offset from UTC
  • M3.2.0 is the start of EDT. 'M' specifies that the date will follow a 'Month.Week.Day' format. 3.2.0 is the third month, second week, first day (Sunday)
  • M11.1.0 is the end of EDT. 'M' specifies that the date will follow a 'Month.Week.Day' format. 11.1.0 is the eleventh month, first week, first day (Sunday)

New Zealand Time

NZST-12NZDT-12,M10.1.0,M3.3.0

From left to right:

  • NZST-12 is the time zone name and offset from UTC
  • NZST-13 is the daylight savings time zone name and offset from UTC
  • M10.1.0 is the start of the NZDT
  • M3.3.0 is the end of NZDT
  • Note: NZ Daylight Savings Time is 13 hours ahead of UTC and runs from the first Sunday in October to the third Sunday in March

Once NTP has been enabled, the gage time will automatically synchronize each time it connects to a WiFi network.
