How to Remotely Log and Monitor Environmental Conditions with the PosiTector DPM L Series

Measuring environmental conditions and remote monitoring with the PosiTector DPM L Dew Point Meter Logger series from DeFelsko—the Measure of Quality.

Throughout the application of protective coatings and other processes, it is critical to ensure that environmental conditions stay within project specifications.

Most importantly, the surface temperature must stay above the dew point- the temperature at which condensation forms. This surface moisture is often invisible, but can cause corrosion and premature failure when trapped beneath a coating. According to most international standards, steel surface temperatures should generally be 3 °C (5 °F) above the dew point temperature when painting.

However, the dew point isn’t the only important variable - ambient temperature and humidity can influence how coatings cure and bond.

Today, it is expected that environmental conditions are continuously logged throughout a coatings project.

The PosiTector DPM L and DPM L+ are ideal for monitoring environmental conditions on the job site, in the shop, or nearly anywhere else.

Both PosiTector DPM L models feature precision ambient temperature, ambient humidity, and surface temperature sensors, a Long-Form certificate of calibration traceable to NIST, an IP65- weatherproof and dustproof enclosure, internal memory storage for up to 10,000 logged datasets, and the ability to record parameters at user-selected time intervals from one minute to eight hours. It connects to a smartphone using Bluetooth, which is used to configure the logger and download logged data. The Kensington security slot provides anti-theft protection when paired with the accessory lock, sold separately.

The PosiTector DPM L+ includes all of these features, and can also connect to a WiFi network, allowing logged data to be continuously uploaded to the PosiSoft.net cloud for remote monitoring. Alarms can be configured based on project specifications, and an email sent if any environmental parameters exceed those thresholds.

Additionally, the PosiTector DPM L+ uses two AAA batteries for up to 2 years of continuous logging. Power can also be provided using the USB port.

To use either logger, unscrew the cap and press and hold the button or flip the switch to turn it on. Replace the cap. The probe will begin broadcasting and become visible to smart devices. Connect using the PosiTector App, available for Apple and Android devices. When a logger is first selected, live measurements are displayed.

The logger can be attached to the desired location using the magnetic surface temperature sensor, and locked to a secure pipe or beam with the optional accessory lock.

If using a PosiTector DPM L+, the WiFi connection can be configured from the setup menu. Once connected to WiFi, readings are transmitted to PosiSoft.net on intervals as short as 1 minute when powered by USB or 1 hour on battery. The WiFi test option helps verify a successful connection if the logger is relocated.

Email alarms are configured from the setup menu. Choose the desired parameters, enter the appropriate limit, and an email address. A test email can be generated to verify successful email communication.

For either logger, begin logging by selecting the ‘Start logging’ menu item. Choose the desired logging interval

The logger can now be left unmonitored and will store up to 10,000 datasets in memory. For either logger, stored readings can be downloaded and reports can be generated and emailed by reconnecting to the app. Readings downloaded to the app are also automatically synchronized with PosiSoft.net.

If using a PosiTector DPM L+ connected to WiFi, readings are also uploaded to PosiSoft.net at the sync interval, with no need to approach the logger or connect to the app.

By creating a PosiSoft.net account and entering the logger’s serial number and key, data that has been synchronized via WiFi or the app can be graphed and analyzed using the PosiTector DPM Monitor feature. Select a desired timeframe and which parameters to display, to quickly identify trends and patterns. The graph automatically updates with the latest measurement data.

Data that has been synchronized to PosiSoft.net can also be downloaded to the PosiSoft Desktop application for Windows or Mac, using the same login. PosiSoft desktop is the ideal platform for archiving readings and creating customized reports from one or more probes and loggers.
